Figure of the Sun and Moon
A unique figurine combining the sun and moon produced in the Talavera style. The Mexican craftsman perfectly combined the sun and the moon indicating the inevitable passing of time, the ending of the day and the beginning of the night. The sun symbolises warmth and divine power, while the night decorated with the moon allows for rest, peaceful sleep and preparation for the next day. By combining the sun and the moon, the artist shows man's temporal journey through life and the passing of time.
The figure emphasises the contrast between the sun and the moon, day and night, the craftsman coloured the moon white and the sun yellow. The rays of the sun are decorated with ornaments reminiscent of floral patterns, so characteristic of the Talavera method. The artist used shades of yellow, blue, orange, red and green, which are common in this type of ceramics. A glaze was applied to the thick natural pigment, which prevents discolouration and protects the product from mechanical damage. Figurines of the moon and the sun are very often used as decoration in the interiors of Mexican houses.
