Figure of the Dark Sun
Amazing sun figurine with dark face, made in Talavera style.
This is a very special figurine, it can refer to natural and weather events. It can be associated, for example, with a solar eclipse. The figurine indicates the divine power and the unnatural powers that the sun possesses. Mexicans attach great importance and reverence to the sun. The face of the sun was painted by an artisan in black with blue and red eyes and lips. The rays of the sun are decorated with floral patterns in shades of black, green, blue and yellow. The whole is rather gloomy and may also refer to the symbolism of death. The figurine has been coated with a thick natural dye and glaze, which allows for a 3D-like effect.
Talavera style
The production of Talavera-style pottery in Mexico began in the 15th century. This way of making faience and firing clay was brought by Spanish colonizers from the town of Talavera de la Reina. These products are characterised by very high accuracy of manufacturing using traditional methods, and the products created using this method are made in short series or even as individual pieces, thanks to which the ceramics called Talavera are sought after by collectors all over the world. It is worth mentioning that apart from figurines, coffee and tea services as well as glazed and terracotta ceramics tiles are also manufactured in this method.
