Sun figurine with an emerging second face
A unique, original figurine of the sun with an emerging second face, made in the Talavera style. The symbolism of this figurine, that is the sun with a new face emerging, refers to birth, waking day or new life. Mexicans believe that the sun is a gift from God or has divine properties. It is the sun that influences the passing of time, the seasons, the vegetation of plants, and thus the daily life of man. The sun figurine is covered with a natural yellow colour and its rays are decorated with floral ornamentation, characteristic of the Talavera style. The second face emerging from the sun, which may symbolise the birth of a child, is very impressive. A thick natural dye has been applied to the figurine, and the top layer is enamel, which protects the figurine from discolouration and UV radiation. The figurine is painted in shades of yellow, orange, blue, green and red, which also characterise Talavera ceramics.
Talavera ceramics
This method of production was imported from the Spanish town of Talavera de la Reina. It was brought to Mexico by Spanish colonizers in the mid-15th century. Since then, with minor changes, the artisans have maintained the traditional way of production. Talavera ceramics are produced in short series or as individual products. Thanks to this Talavera products are sought after by collectors from all over the world and their prices reach very high heights.
